Parahyangan Somaka Giri: Hidden Cultural Charm at GWK Cultural Park
Amidst the hustle and bustle of tourism on the Island of the Gods, GWK Cultural Park is a destination dedicated to preserving history and embodying Bali's rich and sublime cultural heritage. GWK Cultural Park encapsulates thousands of meaningful stories through a variety of intricately designed sculptures, dances, music, and landscape art. One such story is the story of Parahyangan Somaka Giri, a place of worship with an eternal spring, sacred to the Balinese Hindu community living nearby. You will be invited to delve into the story of this eternal spring through the lens of Balinese culture, a cultural and spiritual experience that will invite you to experience the beauty of Balinese culture firsthand.

Parahyangan Somaka Giri is located in the Plaza Wisnu area, the highest point in GWK Cultural Park, where the iconic statue of Lord Vishnu stands. You'll be greeted by yellow-and-white Balinese tedung umbrellas, complete with pennants lining the entrance steps. Each step you take as you ascend the stairs is like a journey through a window of time, entering a serene, sacred, and holy dimension. You're required to wear a kamen (traditional Javanese cloth) as a symbol of decorum and etiquette upon entering this sacred space.

First, you'll be introduced to the concept of Panca Maha Bhuta , the five basic elements that make up the universe according to Balinese Hinduism. Light, Earth, Water, Air, and Space combine to form and sustain the universe. Each element has a unique, interconnected function.

Parahyangan Somaka Giri is said to have a close connection to the elements. This belief is related to the presence of an eternal spring, believed to possess magical powers and a blessing that flows from the limestone cliffs. According to local beliefs, this eternal spring is a blessing because it never dries up, even during the long dry season. Furthermore, the community also considers Parahyangan Somaka Giri a sacred place because it is used for prayer ceremonies.

After hearing the story of the Five Great Bhutas, and if you wish, you will be invited to participate in a prayer ritual led by Jro Mangku, who is entrusted with the care of Parahyangan Somaka Giri. Prayers and good wishes will be offered accompanied by the sound of the Bajra , followed by sprinkling of holy water. At the end of the ritual, you will receive a Tridatu bracelet, a three-color bracelet in red, white, and black, symbolizing the Tri Murti in Hinduism.
