GWK Presents Mini Ogoh-Ogoh and Tapel Exhibition to Welcome the Eid Holiday
Badung, April 1, 2024. GWK Cultural Park presents the 2024 Mini Ogoh-Ogoh and Tapel Exhibition, running from March 29, 2024, until the end of the year. Ogoh-ogoh and Tapel are sculptural works of art in Balinese culture and are part of a traditional celebration leading up to Nyepi Day. Located on the ground floor of the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Statue, 20 Mini Ogoh-Ogoh and 10 Tapel were selected from a total of 60 works presented by participants from across Bali, featuring acrylic displays and sophisticated lighting. The Mini Ogoh-Ogoh and Tapel artists were free to use their imaginations and express their ideas and creativity in the figures they created. Balinese cultural nuances remain the foundation of the works, featuring legendary figures, both antagonists and protagonists from Balinese Hindu mythology.

Ogoh-Ogoh generally serve as symbols of cleansing nature from evil traits, and the Tapel is no exception. Ogoh-Ogoh represent characters with full-body features, while Tapel focuses only on the details and shape of the head. Tapel is the Balinese term for a mask. However, unlike most masks, the ogoh-ogoh's tapel has full dimensions, not just half a face.

"As a cultural tourism destination that upholds religious tolerance, we have prepared the 2024 Mini Ogoh-Ogoh and Tapel Exhibition, where the artists involved are enthusiastically participating in creating stunning works. We hope this exhibition will be a special attraction for visitors during the Eid holiday season. And of course, we hope this exhibition will also be an interesting attraction for foreign tourists," explained Stefanus Yonathan Astayasa, Operations Director of GWK Cultural Park.

Prioritizing environmentally friendly materials, all works are made using wire as the frame, clay as a substitute for Styrofoam, and paper mache, which are commonly used by artists. The selection of works on display prioritizes concept, synopsis, expression, harmony and neatness, creativity, and color. Besides being a great and engaging photo spot for visitors, all visitors can access the exhibition area for free, as it is included in the GWK entrance ticket.
