The Legend of Garuda Wisnu: The Sacrifice and Loyalty of a Child
GWK Cultural Park is home to the iconic Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue. The GWK statue depicts Lord Vishnu, the Preserver of the universe , riding Garuda, the legendary and powerful bird in Hindu mythology. Behind this majestic statue lies a noble story of sacrifice, devotion, and a son's sincere devotion to his mother.

Once upon a time, Dewi Winata, mother of Garuda, was trapped in the cunning plot of Dewi Kadru, sister and wife of Bhagawan Kashyapa. Due to Dewi Kadru's cunning and deceit, Dewi Winata had to accept her fate of becoming a slave to the Nagas, Dewi Kadru's children. This story is full of intrigue and emotion, showing how Dewi Winata's fate changed suddenly after her defeat. The story of Kadru's cunning and deceit is fully described here.
Winata's grief apparently sparked the birth of her second son. Garuda was born, possessing extraordinary powers. Moved by his mother's cries, Garuda resolved to free her from the enslavement of the Nagas. However, to free Dewi Winata, Garuda must undertake a difficult task: to find and bring back Tirta Amertha, the water of immortality possessed by the gods. Garuda's struggle to obtain Tirta Amertha is the core of the Garuda Wisnu legend, which is steeped in the values of sacrifice and a son's love for his mother.
Garuda's journey to find Tirta Amertha was not easy. He faced various obstacles and trials along the way. He even had to fight the gods to achieve his goal. After overcoming all obstacles, Garuda finally stood before Lord Vishnu , who guarded and kept Tirta Amertha. Lord Vishnu was willing to give Tirta Amertha to Garuda, but on the condition that Garuda return it intact and later dedicate himself to being Lord Vishnu's vehicle or mount.

After successfully bringing Tirta Amertha, Garuda was able to free his mother from the shackles of the Dragon race. However, because of the promise made with... Lord Vishnu , Garuda, was forced to leave his mother and fulfill his duties as the god's mount. Dewi Winata willingly gave Garuda her blessing, provided he promised to visit his mother occasionally. Her story symbolizes sacrifice, loyalty, trust, and eternal bonds.
Garuda's sacrifices earned him the respect of the god Vishnu, and he was eventually entrusted with the role of his mount.
